“smile” painted by the toes of Rosie Jon (in collaboration with 3-5yr old children in special ed) | 12″ x 12″ Tempera paint, acrylic inks and mixed media

Today, I got to paint with some very special children and their amazing special ed teachers and paraprofessionals.

Each child was asked to draw a smile on the canvas with a crayon held between their little toes.  Some needed a little assistance, but most of them confidently gave it a try.  And for the little ones that needed extra encouragement, their faces lit up with a big smile as soon as we cheered for them.

Once my toes were done adding some splashes of colour, the children added glitter over the canvas to help complete the art.

In our lives, it is so easy to frown and grumble about our troubles when things don’t go our way.  But as soon as we respond with joy, patience and faith, we can overcome darkness with light.  Just like the bright colours and sparkling effect of the glitter on the canvas, a smile spreads joy to others.  So remember to smile and remember that your smile has that luminous effect on others; bringing light and joy to the heart.

Romans 12:12 (NIV)

“Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.”

Proverbs 15:30 (NLT)

“A cheerful look brings joy to the heart”
